Typical Day:

2:40-3:30PM Students arrive, get settled, have a snack, play quietly with their friends, and do homework

3:30-5:00PM Enrichment classes *

5:00-6:00PM Free play until pick-up (we take the children to the schoolyard, weather and daylight permitting)

* NOTE: On Tuesdays, enrichment classes run from 4:00 – 5:30 due to mandated DOE scheduled meetings for teachers and use of classrooms.

Mondays

Art Factory with Oliver: Pre-K to 1st Grade

Inspiration comes in many forms. Children will engage in a complete sensory explanation of art through painting, drawing, watercolor, clay, building, and collage. The students will explore the world they live in while utilizing recycled objects, building a classroom culture in which students come to love and appreciate art. They will be cultivating talents, while deepening their knowledge and understanding of art.

Fitness & Sports Club: Pre-K to 1st Grade

This fitness games club will motivate our little ones to walk, run, jump, dance, and move their entire bodies while playing different games and having fun. Each session will include various fun educational fitness and exercise games and activities. Examples are group parachute fun, fitness tic tac toe, obstacle courses, animal musical chair––just to name a few. Healthy bodies mean healthy minds and learning through play is often the most effective way to teach kids important concepts such as teamwork and cooperation while helping them to master key locomotor and non-locomotor skills.

Gardening & Sustainability with Mr Jonathan: Pre-K to 5th Grade

This class looks at the life cycle of a garden over an entire year. Rain and winter activities will be mainly focused on food, including some simple cooking. Students will spend as much time outside as the weather permits, working in the garden, turning and sifting compost, and will watch the garden transform when spring comes. This class includes possible field trips to Fort Greene Park.

Hip Hop Dance with Mark Morris: 1st to 5th Grade

Established in the 1970’s in New York City, Hip-Hop dance as an element of the Hip-Hop culture has become a popular and innovative movement style across the world. Our classes begin with a community building warm-up, followed by skill building in large and small groups. Students learn and build on choreography and class culminates in a cypher-style improvisation. Students explore their personal voice through freestyle (improvisation) and a wide range of codified styles, including breaking, popping, and locking.

Nunchaku with Mr. Anthony: 2nd to 5th Grade

Learning nunchaku techniques allows the student to understand balance and control of body movements. This class aims to improve overall hand-eye coordination, to build confidence and balance, and to understand the discipline involved in Nunchaku’s physical techniques. Students will also learn about the cultural history of Nunchaku, including where they come from, and how they developed as an object of fascination and iconology.

Tuesdays

Performance & Dance with Mark Morris: Pre-K to 1st Grade

The perfect introduction for the future study of all dance techniques. This class blends movement, music, improvisation, and basic dance steps. Students learn dance fundamentals to live musical accompaniment while improving motor skills, self-expression, confidence, imagination, and social development.

Violin with Brooklyn Music School: 1st to 5th Grade

Students will study the violin, the most popular instrument in the string family. In this group violin class, students learn how to handle and connect with the instrument, read music, play as part of an ensemble, and develop a repertoire of classic early pieces. After this introductory course, violin players will also be eligible to join BMS string ensembles. NOTE: This class has a one-time materials fee of $25

Artist Hub with Mr Anthony: 2nd to 5th Grade

This class will work to further develop students’ art skills and have them become more comfortable with a variety of art tools. Children will be introduced to the vocabulary of art and begin to explore such media as clay, charcoal, drawing, painting, design, collage watercolor, and more. Artist Hub will give students the opportunity to explore and create.

Wednesdays

Robot Building with Brooklyn Robot Foundry: Kindergarten to 2nd Grade

Your child will have a great time building their very own robotic creations. From cars, to hoverboards, to robotic instruments and more these classes are fun and educational! These sessions will introduce children to the fun of engineering and over the course of the semester provide them with a comprehensive knowledge on circuitry and building. These sessions will begin with basic circuits using LEDs and graduate to using linkages, parallel circuits and interactions between a variety of engineering components. Each session will start with a lesson on new and exciting engineering concepts related to that week’s project. Your child will build, design and keep their very own robotic creations! NOTE: This class has a one-time materials fee of $50

Checkmate with Mr Anthony: Kindergarten to 5th Grade

Chess promotes critical thinking, step-by-step analysis, sharp attention, and focus. Checkmate is a chance for young minds to learn more about the ancient game of chess. This class will introduce basic chess moves and offer opportunities for young bright minds to explore various tactics through gameplay and puzzles. Students will learn basic chess and engage other students in a friendly, competitive gameplay using both winning and losing as tools for growth. The class will enhance focus, critical thinking skills, and attention to physical gameplay while also stimulating the mind to promote creative, direction-oriented, positive results.

Capoeira with Capoeira Vida: 2nd to 5th Grade

The children will engage in an exciting and original workout that comes from a combination of martial arts, dance, acrobatics, and music. In addition to a form of exercise, it is a rich and multidimensional art that teaches culture, language, and music. Capoeira is always played in a circle, or roda, where the participants are both the musicians and the players. The roda de capoeira is an energetic and joyful culmination of all the skills learned during the class and, as nothing is choreographed, a great lesson in quick reflex and spontaneity.

Drama with Brooklyn Music School: 2nd to 5th Grade

Students use their voices and bodies to tell great stories. This is an amazing way to expand students’ imaginations through short scenes and plays. At the end of the semester we will work together to put on a final showcase.

Cooking Around the World with Allergic to Salad: Pre-K to 1st Grade

Pack a bag and grab your passport, because we’re taking a culinary adventure around the world! Throughout the school year, we’ll be visiting different countries across the globe through our fun, hands-on, from-scratch cooking classes, whether after-school or during the school day. Perfect for students aged pre-K through 5th grade, our programming creates a platform for a lifetime of adventurous eating and purposeful life-skills. Classes focus on international cuisine and food history, where students will learn all about the origins of some of the world’s favorite ingredients and dishes, all while honing knife and produce identification skills along the way. Kids will be cooking up and tasting dishes like Jamaican jerk tofu with mango salsa, Japanese sushi rolls, Polish sweet potato pierogies, West African jollof rice, and more! Students receive a magnet with link to online recipe portal plus a culinary passport book to complete in class.

Fitness & Sports Club with Mr Fox: 1st to 5th Grade

In this active class, students will learn the necessary skills of basic sports and recreation. We will cover skill progression through games and activities, teaching students object control skills, rules and regulations for several sports, sportsmanship and teamwork. Games will be modified to increase participation and maintain interest and excitement. Sports may include soccer, kickball, bowling, and hockey. Games will include steal the bacon, cranes and crows, sharks and minnows, castle ball and more!

Yoga with Little Feet Wise Heart Yoga: 1st to 5th Grade

A fun-filled, interactive class where children learn balance, coordination and strength-building from the inside and out. Kids will discover creative yoga poses evocative of nature, animals and the world around them. Using books, artistic play, breath work, mindfulness practice and art these classes encourage confidence, joy and tools for ‘off the mat’ and into life! There will be time at the end for all to relax their bodies and minds during quiet time, or Savasana, so kids leave class a little more connected for the rest of their day.

Inventors Lab - Simple Machines with KoKo NYC: 2nd to 5th Grade

Kids will discover how and why each of the six basic simple machines was invented (inclined plane, wedge, lever, wheel and axle, screw, pulley) as they apply this knowledge towards a series of fun challenges. Through trial and error experiments, kids will work together in small teams to build simple and compound machines and have a chance to practice collaborative problem solving and creative solutions. The class will also include learning about artists that are also scientists -from Renaissance artists such as Leonardo da Vinci to contemporaries Fischli and Weiss – who will inspire the group to create their own original inventions. KoKo NYC’s goal is to spark scientific inspiration through a FUN, exploratory, hands-on creative learning process.

Yoga with Little Feet Wise Heart Yoga: Pre-K to 1st Grade

A fun-filled, interactive class where children learn balance, coordination and strength-building from the inside and out. Architecture & Design for Kids with ARDE: 1st to 5th Grade

Do you dream of building on a grand scale? Mega tall pyramids, "ceiling scrapers," a bridge as long as your classroom or a watchtower for your favorite superhero are among the structures students are going to erect in this class. Besides the largest projects in the afterschool world, students will build furniture, create a 3D scale model of your dream house, design a street facade and even produce a master plan of a city where family and friends could live. The graduates of the class will have an introduction to classical Vitruvian principles, light & shadow, aesthetics, texture, composition, visual & spatial thinking, balance, scale, and much more.

Play Zone ($22 a day) with Ms Shameeka: Kindergarten to 5th Grade

Veteran Mosaic staffer and kid-favorite Ms Shameeka brings the fun in this semi-structured free play session. Your kid will wind down from a busy school week with cool art crafts, board games, legos, playground time, and movement games like jump rope and tag. Ms Shameeka knows how to keep kids busy and happy. And as a bonus for parents––she’ll throw in a few minutes of homework help each week, too!
