Spring 2020 Classes

Typical Day*:

2:40-3:30PM Students arrive, get settled, have a snack, play quietly with their friends, and do homework

3:30-5:00PM Enrichment classes **

5:00-6:00PM Free play until pick-up (we take the children to the schoolyard, weather and daylight permitting)

* Pre-K classes sometimes follow a slightly different schedule to ensure safety and a happy, healthy play environment for out littlest children

** On Tuesdays, enrichment classes run from 4:00 – 5:30 due to mandated DOE scheduled meetings for teachers and use of classrooms.

Semester Schedule:

Mosaic follows the DOE schedule and, unless a camp is announced, is not held on days where there is no school.

When you register for a class, you register until the end of the semester. We do not take partial semester registration.

Please note that the enrichment classes are scheduled to end the week of May 22. Programming will change thereafter to take advantage of more pleasant weather. In addition to increased outdoor time, beginning the week of May 26 we will hold a modified schedule of fun staff-led classes, which will be posted later in the semester. Mondays

Pre-K Program: Fun at the Zoo with Mr. Adam: Pre-K

Fun at the Zoo will focus on how animals all over the world live, and eat, and play. Children will also learn how to help keep animals healthy. They will be able to touch and interact with a selected number of animals, and will engage in creative art projects and imaginative play about the animals they meet!

Fitness & Sports Club: K to 1st Grade

In this active class, students will learn the necessary skills of basic sports and recreation. We will cover skill progression through games and activities, teaching students object control skills, rules and regulations for several sports, sportsmanship and teamwork. Games will be modified to increase participation and maintain interest and excitement. Sports may include soccer, kickball, bowling, and hockey. Games will include steal the bacon, cranes and crows, sharks and minnows, castle ball, and more!

Art Factory with Oliver: K to 2nd Grade

Inspiration comes in many forms. Children will engage in a complete sensory explanation of art through painting, drawing, watercolor, clay, building, and collage. Students will explore the world they live in while utilizing recycled objects, and building a classroom culture in which students come to love and appreciate art. They will cultivate their talents, while deepening their knowledge and understanding of art.

Farm to Table with Mr. Jonathan: K to 3rd Grade

This class looks at the life cycle of a garden over an entire year. Rain and winter activities will be mainly focused on food, including some simple cooking. Students will spend as much time outside as the weather permits, working in the garden, turning and sifting compost, and will watch the garden transform when spring comes. This class includes possible field trips to Fort Greene Park.

Hip Hop Dance with Mark Morris Dance Group: 1st to 5th Grade

Established in the 1970s in New York City, Hip-Hop dance as an element of the Hip-Hop culture has become a popular and innovative movement style across the world. Our classes begin with a community building warm-up, followed by skill building in large and small groups. Students learn and build on choreography and class culminates in a cypher-style improvisation. Students explore their personal voice through freestyle (improvisation) and a wide range of codified styles, including breaking, popping, and locking.

Circus Arts with Brooklyn Beanstalk: 2nd to 5th Grade

Students explore the different techniques of traditional circus arts from juggling to acrobatics, balancing objects and physical comedy. For older children, classes also integrate elements of a performing artist practice; developing awareness of the stage, the audience and acting out newly acquired skills in the context of a show.

Tuesdays

Pre-K Program: Creative Dance with Mark Morris Dance Group/Structured Play with Mosaic Staff: Pre-K

Creative Dance blends movement, music, improvisation, and basic dance steps while providing an excellent introduction for the future study of all dance techniques. Students learn dance fundamentals while improving motor skills, self-expression, confidence, imagination, and social development. Children will alternate between Creative Movement and structured creative play with Mosaic Staff every other week. Structured play will include table and movement games, crafts, and building projects.

Beginners/Intermediate Chess with Tri-State Chess: K to 5th Grade

Chess promotes critical thinking, step-by-step analysis, sharp attention, and focus. This class is a chance for young minds to learn more about the ancient game of chess. This class will introduce basic chess moves and offer opportunities for young bright minds to explore various tactics through gameplay and puzzles. Students will learn basic chess and engage other students in a friendly, competitive gameplay using both winning and losing as tools for growth. The class will enhance focus, critical thinking skills, and attention to physical gameplay while also stimulating the mind to promote creative, direction-oriented, positive results.

U­Can Ukulele with Brooklyn Music School: 1st to 5th Grade

One of the hottest instruments out, this little guitar ­like music maker rocks the house. More manageable for young strummers, the ukulele provides a great way to get into the action early and is a great stepping stone to the guitar. NOTE: This class has a one-time materials fee of $15

Wonderkid NYC Comics with Marisol Reed: 2nd to 5th Grade

This class will work to further develop students’ art skills and have them become more comfortable with a variety of art tools. Children will be introduced to the language of drawing and cartooning. Learn to develop characters using the form of comics, toy/doll and puppet making, as well as architectural modeling.

Capoeira with Capoeira Vida: K to 2nd Grade

The children will engage in an exciting and original workout that comes from a combination of martial arts, dance, acrobatics, and music. In addition to a form of exercise, it is a rich and multidimensional art that teaches culture, language, and music. Capoeira is always played in a circle, or roda, where the participants are both the musicians and the players. The roda de capoeira is an energetic and joyful culmination of all the skills learned during the class and, as nothing is choreographed, a great lesson in quick reflex and spontaneity.

Splat Lab with Anthropology Arts: K to 3rd Grade

Splat Lab features seasonal projects as well as old favorites such as slime, cloud clay, splat foam, and cup castles. We'll have fun winter and spring projects such as Snowdough (conditioner clay), tie dye snowflakes, Valentine's slime, and flower making. Every session will feature student choice and the option for free exploration such as tinker stations, butcher paper free draw, and beading. NOTE: This class has a one-time materials fee of $20

Advanced Chess with Tri-State Chess: 2nd to 5th Grade

Advanced Chess promotes critical thinking, step-by-step analysis, sharp attention, and focus. Chess is a chance for young minds to learn about the ancient game of chess. Creative Drama with Ms. Twinkle Burke: 2nd to 5th Grade

Creative Drama will utilize Theatre Games, Improvisation, Creative Writing, imagination, and more to encourage students to explore their ability to create stories within a dramatic structure. In the class they will work in teams and individually to express emotions and tell stories in a safe space.

Thursdays

Bitbots + Space with KoKo NYC: K to 2nd Grade

Learn about the incredible makeup of our universe by taking a look at current NASA projects and uncovering fascinating details about the planets. As part of the workshop, our teaching artist will bring in the latest space news to share with the class to spark their imaginations. Through space history and current events, kids will be inspired to build intergalactic space vessels, alien language interpreter machines and more as they combine recycled materials with simple electronics that power their inventions!

Yoga with Little Feet Wise Heart Yoga: 1st to 5th Grade

A fun-filled, interactive class where children learn balance, coordination and strength-building from the inside and out. Kids will discover creative yoga poses evocative of nature, animals and the world around them. Using books, artistic play, breath work, mindfulness practice and art these classes encourage confidence, joy and tools for ‘off the mat’ and into life! There will be time at the end for all to relax their bodies and minds during quiet time, or Savasana, so kids leave class a little more connected for the rest of their day.

Singers Showcase with Brooklyn Music School: 2nd to 5th Grade

Ready to sing your favorite modern and classic pop songs, and even compose one too! This vocal workshop takes you to the stage or to the studio, building repertoire and ensemble cooperation.

There will be time at the end for all to relax their bodies and minds during quiet time, or Savasana, so kids leave class a little more connected for the rest of their day.

Gaming Club with Mosaic Staff: K to 5th Grade

Gaming Club brings the fun in everything gaming. We know that board games and tabletop role playing games are FUN, but they also encourage critical thinking, literacy skills, problem solving, emotional intelligence! This class will focus on the teachings of specific games including; board games, brain games, team building games, and so much more. Students will also be able to develop their own games using the theory "think, build, tell." Learning to create their own games will give the kids the creativity to engineer their own styles and learn different mechanics of building from the ground up.

Architecture & Design for Kids with ARDE: 1st to 5th Grade

Do you dream of building on a grand scale? Mega tall pyramids, "ceiling scrapers," a bridge as long as your classroom or a watchtower for your favorite superhero are among the structures students are going to erect in this class. Besides the largest projects in the afterschool world, students will build furniture, create a 3D scale model of your dream house, design a street facade and even produce a master plan of a city where family and friends could live. The graduates of the class will have an introduction to classical Vitruvian principles, light & shadow, aesthetics, texture, composition, visual & spatial thinking, balance, scale, and much more.

Sports and Games with Mosaic Staff

Students will take part in outdoor sports while gaining the ability to stay centered, work different muscles, learn the importance of stretching, and focus on learn sportsmanship.

Step Captains with Mosaic Staff

Students will learn the art of stepping/cheering. They will create movements and chants that represent P.S. 20 and Mosaic.

Dance and Tell with Mosaic Staff

Students will be able to create stories through dance as well as explore their own creative movement styles through the use of imaginative music and games.

Paint and Play with Mosaic Staff

Students will learn about color theory and shapes, they will explore textures and strengthen their cognitive learning skills all through repetition, problem solving, and cause & effect.

Double Dutch Aerobics with Mosaic Staff

The students will be able to learn the game of Double Dutch, a style of jump rope in which two “turners” rotate two long jump ropes simultaneously, and a jumper vaults into the middle of the twirling ropes. The jumper must hop doubly fast because two ropes are alternatingly hitting the ground around the person . Experienced jumpers can add tricks such as jumping jacks, dance moves or even pushups while jumping, or add two, three, or four jumpers inside the ropes in unison.

Mad Scientist with Mosaic Staff

Students will be able to do science experiments and STEM projects.

Game Club with Mosaic Staff

A social club for students interested in board games, tabletop role playing games, card games, icebreaker games and much more.

Crafts with Mosaic Staff

Students will be able to do hands on craft of their choice using materials such as fabric, crochet, yarn, etc. They will get to sew, mix and match patterns and design clothing, bags, and pillow cases.

Lego Robotics with Mosaic Staff

Students will be able to build robotics out of legos, they will design blueprints using their creative imagination.

Mosaic Choir with Mosaic Staff

Children in the program experience learning through development of musical skills on music literacy, and the development of a solid and healthy vocal technique. This class will build confidence, and encourage artistic expression through developmentally appropriate vocal instruction. The Children's Choir provides an ensemble experience that allows students to develop musically as individuals while contributing to the joy and artistry of singing together with their peers.

Mindful Creations with Mosaic Staff

Students will be able to use their creative side to write poetry, songs and subject papers on their interest. This will enhance their writing abilities, they will get to perform written project in front of the class to help with stage presentation.

Read, Think, Create with Mosaic Staff

Students will be able to read a book and enjoy fun crafts from the selected book.

Dramatic Play with Mosaic Staff

Students will be able to have fun while improving and making up scenes with friends, while building their ability to act.
